Calvin Ayre arrest (update)

11.03.2006

It is still not clear what is happening in Costa Rica regarding the Calvin Ayre arrest (see reports earlier today)

911, a familiar outlet for Bodog / Ayre publicity hype is carrying a story that the Ayre mansion in Costa Rica was raided at 20h00 Friday night by a substantial force of armed national police, with Ayre being arrested.

Speculation on the reasons behind this range from police raiding a poker game, possession of drugs, possession of firearms....or just another Bodog publicity stunt.

The Spanish press in CR has reported on the event, and InfoPowa has enquiries in with English speaking press for an indpenedent confirmation on what is happening.

Reports suggest that Ayre's neighbours were unhappy with the noise and show lighting emanating from Ayre's residence earlier in the week, when the online gambling billionaire hosted a big party to celebrate the start of filming for a new TV reality show hosted by Ayre.

Ayre had featured during the week in Forbes Magazine's weathiest people, and in an interview with the magazine had thumbed his nose at U.S. authorities and the legal (or illegal) status of online gambling in the USA.

Some reports suggest that Fox Sports Net television crews were on hand shooting a poker reality show when the raid took place, but no Fox reports have yet appeared. Reports airing on local Costa Rica television news stations showed several law enforcement vehicles at the house. It was also confirmed that Ayre had been taken into custody.

The raid took place shortly after 8 pm Central Time (Costa Rica time). News Channel 7 in San Jose, Costa Rica, reported that local authorities were called in to investigate an "illegal" poker game being played at the Ayre estate.
