How to Play Texas Hold’em

14.01.2008

Texas Hold’em is one of today’s most popular poker games. Played in casinos and poker rooms all over the world, Texas Hold’em is also one of the most important games in the WSOP (World Series of Poker). While games such as Omaha High, Omaha Hi-Low, and Seven-Card Stud are also popular in the WSOP, Texas Hold’em is by far the most popular. As a result, if you want to play poker, then your old-fashioned Five-Card Draw just isn’t enough anymore. In fact, these days, just about the only place you’ll find Five-Card Draw is at the video poker machines.

Texas Hold’em is very different from Five-Card Draw in a few ways. First, players select a hand of five from the seven cards dealt. Second, players share five community cards. The two games do share some things in common, however. For example, bluffing is an integral part of both games. Additionally, hand rankings are the same for the two games.

Unlike Five-Card Draw, however, Texas Hold’em doesn’t start with an ante. Instead, the two players to the dealer’s left place the small blind and the big blind. Since the big blind doesn’t have to wager any money to stay in, having blinds guarantees that there is a winner for every round. You’re probably wondering how that works. It works because if all the other players fold before the community cards are dealt, the big blind wins the hand.

Play begins after the blinds have been placed. Each player gets two cards, which are called hole cards and they do not show to anyone else. After the hole cards have been dealt, there is a round of betting. Players can choose to meet the current betting level, raise it, or fold. Once all bets have been made in this round, the flop is dealt. The flop consists of three community cards. The flop is followed by a second round of betting, beginning from the small blind.

When the betting after the flop has been completed, a fourth community card, known as the turn or Fourth Street is dealt. This, in turn, is followed by a round of betting and the fifth card, which is known as the river or Fifth Street. Again, there is a round of betting, and when all betting, raising, and folding is complete, the players who have not folded compare their cards. The player with the best hands wins any money that is in the pot.

The reason that Texas Hold’em is such a popular game is that in Texas Hold’em, you have a lot of information as to what your opponents’ hands might be. In a game like Five-Card Draw, the only real information that you have is the number of cards that your opponents elect to draw. In Texas Hold’em, you often have a very good idea as to what your opponents’ hands might be. For example, if you hold two kings, and there is a third king out on the board and it’s the highest card, then you know with absolute certainty that no one holds a better three-of-a-kind than you do. Someone else may hold a better hand, but there are ways for you to analyze that based on the community cards. As a result, Texas Hold’em is a game that’s very rich in strategy and is very popular among today’s poker players.
