Recognizing a Gambling Problem
The gambling watchdog group, eCOGRA recently made public the results of a survey which shows that the majority of players take part in gambling activities because of the fun and entertaining dimensions of the game.
Very few people gamble because they want to get rich. However, there is a small percentage of gamblers who simply do not know when to stop their playing sessions and it can be said about them that they are addicted.
We all love our gambling. Whether it is done at a land-based casino or online, gambling is a pastime that combines fun, skill and excitement and allows us to win some pocket money to boot. Most of us, however, know that at the end of the day, we need to leave the casino or turn off the computer and get back to real life. Some people, however, genuinely have a problem making that switch back into the real world, and this is probably the first sign of a gambling addiction.
There are many telltale signs to recognize a gambling problem. If you have ever missed work or other daily commitments due to your gambling pastimes, you might be heading down the road of addiction. Your need to gamble starts taking over your other needs to make a living or to obtain an education and obviously there is a problem with this. If gambling has ever made your home life unhappy, this should also set off alarm bells. Gambling should be a fun form of entertainment and nothing more. If you are arguing at home about this pastime or you cannot keep your commitments that you have to your family, you should seek help.
Think, too, about the money that you are gambling with. Just as you put aside money for other forms of entertainment such as movies or eating out, so too should you budget your gambling fun. If you go beyond this budget and start using money that is meant for other important matters such as paying the rent or paying off loans, you should recognize that you do not how to control your money and may need help with this issue.
So what should you do once you feel that you have a gambling problem? The first thing to realize is that you are not alone. There are many people in the world going through the same problem that you are and there are professionals who have many years of experience handling compulsive gambling behavior. You should also remember that there is no shame in admitting that you have a problem. In fact, admitting that you need help shows a lot more courage than if you continue hiding the issue from your friends, family and – most importantly – yourself.
A simple look in the yellow pages or through most casino facilities will direct you to the nearest gambling hot-line and will be your first step in seeking help. There are also addiction self-tests that you can try on the internet to see whether you have a problem or not.
