FIFA to investigate Swiss-Moldova game

News on 1 Apr 2009

The international football body FIFA has approved the initiation of an investigation into a game between Switzerland and Moldova in a World Cup qualifying group following suspicions that the game may have been fixed, reports the Russian sports newspaper Sovietsky Sport.
The report says that local gambling regulators were alerted to the possibility by an unusually high number of bets on the Swiss to win by 2-0, a result that came about.
Some Euro 1.5 million caused Russia’s state betting authority to radically reduce the odds for a Swiss victory, from 1.8:1 to 1.2:1 within just two hours. The regulators informed FIFA’s Early Warning System, and FIFA President Sepp Blatter subsequently gave the green light to open the investigation.
