Gibraltar power station fire cuts online gambling services

News on 21 Apr 2014

A fuel tank explosion and fire at a Gibraltar power station Sunday resulted in local power cuts and extensive disruption of international online gambling services provided by Gibraltar-based operators like William Hill, Betfred and Ladbrokes.

Rival BetVictor escaped unscathed thanks to its independent emergency power generator.

The disruption came on a busy day in which UK Premier League football matches were being played.

Local media reports indicated that residents in nearby houses were evacuated, emergency services were stretched and telecommunications services were also disrupted.

The fire broke out at around 1pm local time and was eventually brought under control at around 4.30pm – although many in the area were still without power Sunday night.
