Macau tourism review ordered

News on 6 Mar 2015

In what appears to be a follow-on from comments earlier this month by Macau Social Affairs Secretary Alex Tam that there are concerns about the overly large numbers of mainland tourists visiting the gambling island, Chief Executive Chui Sai On has directed Tan to institute an appropriate review of the situation and the island’s visitor capacity.

The review will cover the period 2003 to the present, he said.

Macau’s chief executive told media in Beijing, where he is attending the National People’s Congress, that the results of Tan’s review would be submitted for direction to China’s central government.

Tan originally gave voice to concerns that the excessive number of visitors to the island was negatively impacting the lives of permanent island residents, and that a more restrictive visa system may be required.
