Mybet awarded Belgian sports betting licence

News on 22 Jul 2011

A licence to offer sports betting in Belgium has been granted to JAXX SE subsidiary myBet.com by the Belgian Gaming Commission.
myBet.com is legally able to offer sports betting in an unlimited number of betting shops due to the award of the F1 licence, the first of which will be opened in the next week.
QED Belgium SPRL is the listed licensee, a newly established member company of the JAXX Group, and while the Licence is initially for betting shops, the company intends applying for an extension to include online products (F1+) once the regulatory framework for the internet has been finalised.
myBet.com has strongly positioned itself to be one of those first off the block once internet regulations have been passed being one of the official participants in the ‘Internet Test Group’ set up by the Belgian Gaming Commission.
A company spokesperson said: “Legislation on the reorganisation of the Belgian gaming market has only recently been passed. Similarly to Italy, France, Denmark and Spain before it, in April Belgium likewise followed the general trend in the EU of ending monopolies and allowing private gaming providers to operate in a regulated environment.”
Mathias Dahms, Management Board, JAXX SE, remarked: “While Germany’s federal states with the exception of Schleswig-Holstein are finding themselves increasingly isolated in the EU because of their protectionism, Belgium is yet another good example of how a market for gaming can be regulated sensibly and liberally – without stifling the emergence of competition in its infancy or neglecting sensitive topics such as player protection and gambling addiction.
“We are delighted to be able to compete in the Belgian market with such an outstanding brand as myBet.com.”
