Swedish online gambling regulation in 2014?

News on 3 Jan 2013

A statement by the Swedish government indicates that the online gambling industry could soon see that nation emulating its Nordic neighbours in proposing legislation to regulate and licence internet gambling…perhaps as early as this year.

The statement, signed off by the prime minister and the finance minister, acknowledges a study undertaken last year by the National Audit Office, and confirms that government will act upon the recommendations flowing therefrom.

The ministers accept that legislative change is necessary, and that a proposal for a regulatory system will be introduced to Parliament for discussion.

Government is especially aware of the need to protect citizens from unlicensed offshore operators and from the dangers of underage and problem gambling, and under a new regulatory system will increase enforcement efforts. The statement commits to a mid-year deadline for the proposal, which would imply implementation by 2014.
