William Hill in trouble with advertising authority

News on 28 Aug 2013

Online and land gambling group William Hill plc has had a run-in with Britain’s Advertising Standards Authority over two newspaper ads dating back to March and April in the Racing Post and The Daily Mirror.

The Authority found that the odds quoted in each were misleading, and ordered the gambling group not to re-run the material.

The disclaimers “prices subject to fluctuation”, and small print saying: “prices correct at 5pm yesterday” were not sufficient to get the company off the hook following a complaint by a member of the public.

The complainant challenged whether the claims “6/1 SIR DES CHAMPS TO WIN THE CHELTENHAM GOLD CUP” and “4/1 THE NEW ONE TO WIN THE JOHN SMITH’S AINTREE HURDLE” were misleading and could be substantiated, because he understood that the quoted odds were only available for a very limited time.
