Multi-million online sports betting ring busted in Indonesia

Police in Jakarta, Indonesia have arrested three people for allegedly taking bets for Isle of Man online bookmaker sbobet.com, reportedly turning over billions of rupiah a month.

Police spokesman Adj. Sr. Comr. Herry Heryawan told the Jakarta Globe that the ring had been active for the past three years, handling up to Rp 30 billion ($2.61 million) in bets a month.

He added that police had blocked the bank account through which the suspects took payments, and that investigators are working with the Communications and Information Technology Ministry to ISP-block the internet gambling site.

The police spokesman revealed that finding the three arrested men has involved widespread investigations that started with the administrator in East Jakarta, then the local bookie in West Jakarta, and finally the ringleader and bank account holder in North Jakarta.

Another police spokesman revealed that the investigation was triggered by a tip-off, and that computers and other evidence was seized in the police actions leading to the arrests.
