Malaysian police detained 12 people and seized 45 computers in several raids on cybercafes in an operation targeting illegal online gambling over the past week, reports the Bernama news service.
Seberang Perai Tengah police chief ACP Mohd Shah Hussin Shah said the operation also led to the seizure of liquor and cigarettes smuggled from a neighbouring country.
The police spokesman said that said the suspects arrested were aged 20 to 67 and would be investigated under Section 4B(a), Common Gaming House Act 1953 for operating gambling activities via the internet.
If convicted, the 12 suspects could be fined up to RM100 000 and jailed a maximum five years.
