Bovada exits New Jersey market

News on 30 May 2014

Bodog brand’s North American franchise, Bovada, has halted new registrations for would-be online poker players resident in New Jersey for reasons that are not yet clear.

In a brief announcement, the company advised:

“Our partner brand Bovada.lv has chosen to stop new account registrations for residents of the state of New Jersey. Existing account holders will not be affected.

“This is a decision they have taken of their own volition and they hope that their existing customers continue to enjoy all of the products and services Bovada.lv has to offer.”

Bovada has made it clear that the restrictive move applies only in respect of online poker, and apparently does not restrict its US-facing Internet casino games, sports betting or horse racing sites. It is clear from the wording of the announcement that existing New Jersey players’ accounts remain unaffected.

The lack of an explanation for the action immediately triggered speculation among industry observers and players across several major forums, with the consensus forming that the recent action of the New Jersey authorities in warning off affiliate marketers (see previous reports) may have provided the impetus for the decision.
