Daily fantasy sports excluded from NBA jersey advertising

News on 5 May 2016

According to a report in the publication ESPN the National Basketball Association is to permit suitable companies to advertise in a small space on team strips for branding…but it appears that daily fantasy sports will be denied the privilege despite its close associations with the sport.

The ESPN report reveals that the 2.5 inch x 2.5 inch jersey advertising opportunity will not be available to businesses involved with alcohol, tobacco, politics, media or gambling…and that excludes DraftKings and FanDuel despite uncertainties in some states regarding the legality of their operations.

Observers have pointed out that the exclusion is illogical, pointing to NBA Commissioner Adam Silver’s assertions in the past that DFS is not gambling but a skill game, various partnerships with DFS companies involving NBA franchises, and the NBA’s shareholding in DraftKings.
