Illinois online horse race wagering saved again

News on 30 Jan 2014

In Illinois the crisis around renewing a law to permit online horse race wagering has again been averted at the eleventh hour after state lawmakers approved an extension in time to allow horse racing tracks to keep their racing schedules intact for 2014.

The publication KSDK reports that the renewal measure passed the Senate 47-4 on Wednesday after the state House voted 98-10 for the renewal.

The legislation allowing online betting had been set to expire this Friday. Racing board officials had predicted major budget cuts without an extension, limiting their oversight capability and forcing racetracks to cut the number of horse races.

The current extension is for three years and includes a surcharge on wagering.
