Merkur withdraws games from German-facing sites

News on 21 Dec 2017

Gauselmann Group, the parent company of German games supplier Merkur has reportedly advised its online casino licensees that their licenses will be revoked if they continue to offer Merkur games to Garman online punters.

The company has cited an October 2017 ruling by the German Federal Administrative Court in the case of BVerwG 8 C 14.16 and 8 C 18.16 as the motivation for its warning.  Gauselmann confirmed that it is complying with German laws against online gambling, long a confusing situation that has yet to be fully resolved due to apparent conflicts with European Union law.

However, observers have reported that the latest tax haven leaks known as the Paradise Papers include a reference to the company’s commercial activities.

Gauselmann appears to be taking a cautious approach to the German court’s ruling, including its licensees serving Schleswig-Holstein online punters, despite the fact that the German province has in the past taken a positive view of licensed and regulated online casino activity
