New Jersey internet cafe operator sentenced

Police raids on two New Jersey internet cafes last year resulted in a Wayne man, 40-year-old Chester Ward, pleading guilty in court this week to running gambling operations on the premises.

Ward was convicted on two counts of maintaining a gambling resort and received a sentence 200 hours of community service, a fine of $2,000 and the forfeiture of $89,000 and 89 computers used in the commission of the offences.

Another accused in the police busts, Jeffrey T. Spencer, still awaits trial.  Two other local men, Gary Roach and Jason R. Bolschof, were charged with promoting and operating a gambling facility and other gambling and conspiracy charges. As first-time offenders they were admitted to the state’s pre-trial intervention, a probation-style program. If they complete the program and are not charged with other crimes, the charges may be dismissed.
