September lottery numbers for China continue upward trend

The rising trend experienced last year by the lotteries see previous report) has continued into 2014, with total lottery sales up 25.2 percent to $5.3 billion in September.

Nevertheless, there was some slowdown compared to August 2014, when massive numbers of punters wagered 31.5 billion yuan, 28.1 percent more than the preceding August.

Sports Lottery sales continued to lead in September 2014 with sales rising 32.5 percent year-on-year to 14.78 billion yuan, the Ministry of Finance said. Sales of Welfare Lottery tickets also remained buoyant, increasing 19.6 percent year to 17.47 billion yuan.

For the first nine months of 2014, total lottery sales stood at 279.4 billion yuan, up 24.5 percent from a year earlier.

The best months so far this year were June and July, when World Cup interest triggered sales, especially in the Sports Lottery, to a 52.7 percent y-o-y high at RMB19.8 billion.
