Turkey clamps down on illegal gambling

According to Turkish newspaper Daily Sabah, the Turkish National Police undertook large-scale raids this past weekend in an effort to root out illegal gambling.

Reported to have involved over 8000 police members, the nationwide raids were conducted on venues suspected to be offering illegal gambling across 81 provinces.

Eighty people were detained as a result, with a further 159 arrested for prior gambling charges. In addition, thirty-six businesses were fined and shut down.
