U.S. Major League Soccer favours wider sports betting legalisation

The American Gaming Association’s drive for a wider legalised sports betting regime in the US than is presently the case under the federal Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act received a boost this week when Don Garber, the commissioner heading the Major League Soccer organisation came out in favour of the proposal, provided proper regulation is in place.

Garber gave his view during an interview at a conference addressed by other sports leaders in Austin, Texas over the weekend, revealing:

“We have a project going on now to really dig in deeply and understand it. I’ll be the third commissioner (along with NBA’s Adam Silver and MLB’s Rob Manfred) in and say I’m very open to understanding how we can get more engaged in this market in a way that I think if done properly, can be regulated and managed and controlled. I’ll join the chorus of saying it’s time to bring it out of the dark ages,” he said.
