UK football betting restriction awareness drive

News on 4 Aug 2014

The UK Football Association (FA) has released a series of video clips as part of a campaign aimed at educating the public regarding the worldwide betting ban which came into force on August 1, 2014 (see previous  reports).

The new betting rules apply to players, managers, club employees and match officials and cover both domestic and international football games across all channels.  Betting types banned include in-person betting, telephone betting, betting with friends, betting through a third party and betting on any other football-related matter such as the transfer of players, employment of managers or team selection.

Implementation of the new betting rules are supported by the UK Premier League, Football League, Woman’s Super League, League Managers’ Association, Professional Footballers’ Association and Football Conference.

“The FA constantly evaluates its rules and regulations in consultation across English football to ensure they meet the needs of the modern game,” commented Darren Bailey, The FA’s director of Football Governance and Regulation.  “This betting rule change to encompass all aspects of world football provides a simple, clear and straightforward message to all participants concerned, on where the line is drawn.”

The campaign covers a wide range of media including posters, leaflets, video and other literature.  Video clips covering betting rules, match fixing and inside information can be accessed here: http://www.thefa.com/football-rules-governance/betting/betting-and-integrity-films
