Why was 888’s Danish online gambling licence not extended?

News on 5 Jan 2013

Our readers will recall the news earlier this week that the Danish government had extended the duration of full online gambling licenses awarded to some 31 major industry companies from the current one year to five years….however, it has since emerged that Gibraltar-based 888.com was not among them.

888 is one of the biggest and most established companies in the business, and it is not immediately clear why it was left out in the cold.

The gambling group has so far declined to make any comment on the reasons for its exclusion from an elite group that included Ladbrokes, Unibet, Pokerstars, Betfair, Betsson, bwin.party, bet365 and Sportingbet.

Certainly 888 has shown sustained interest in the Danish market, and a spokesman for the company has confirmed that 888 continues to observe Danish developments closely. Local reports suggest that it is still active in the Danish market.

The Danish Gambling Authority is similarly close-lipped about the omission of 888 from the extended licensing list, deepening the intrigue surrounding this issue.
