European Court of Justice supports federal regulation of online gambling

In a ruling published Thursday, the European Court of Justice supported Germany’s strict federal regulation of online gambling, saying it was justified even though the regional state of Schleswig-Holstein had temporarily eased the rules.

In a case brought by Digibet challenging the legitimacy of a German block on its offering to German punters, the Court noted:

“The 15 remaining [German] states are not required to change their rules just because a single state had pursued a more liberal policy for a limited time.” had earlier claimed that the more liberal rules applied by the regional state of Schleswig Holstein implied that these rules should also apply in the rest of Germany.
