European Parliament publishes GDPR advisory

News on 26 May 2017

The European Parliament has published an information advisory on The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which comes into effect from May 2018.

The GDPR aims to protect all EU citizens from privacy and data breaches in an increasingly data-driven, ever changing world. All companies operating within the European Union will be required to adopt the rules or face stiff fines up to 4 percent on global turnover.

The GDPR covers breach notification, right to access, right to be forgotten or data erasure, data portability, privacy by design, and the minimum requirements firms would need to undertake in terms of employing Data Protection Officers.

In a joint statement following the adoption of the GDPR, EC commissioners Frans Timmermans and Věra Jourová said at the time: “The new rules will ensure that the fundamental right to personal data protection is guaranteed for all. The General Data Protection Regulation will help stimulate the Digital Single Market in the EU by fostering trust in online services by consumers and legal certainty for businesses based on clear and uniform rules.”
