Italian market growth in 2015

According to research commissioned by AAMS/Sogei and undertaken by the Politecnico di Milano’s Osservatorio Gioco Online, Italian online players spent Euro 821 million on regulated games during 2015, a 13 percent increase.

A 27 percent growth in casino games led to an increase in terms of total gaming expenditure bringing the online sector to account for 4.8 percent of total online and offline gaming in Italy (2014: 4.2 percent).

Online casino games reached Euro 328 million, accounting for 40 percent of the overall online market.

Sports betting amounted to Euro 267 million, 32 percent of the online market.

“Italy represents a benchmark for western countries wishing to adopt national license systems,” said Marco Planzi, director of the Politecnico di Milano’s Osservatorio Gioco Online.

State online gaming tax revenues rose 23 percent for the 2015 fiscal year, amounting to around Euro 205 million.

But virtual betting, online poker and bingo’s reversed fortunes show poker declining 18 percent and bingo and virtual betting down seven percent.

“The Italian offer of competitive and regulated games is among the most comprehensive in Europe thanks to the effective activity carried out over the years by the Agenzia delle Dogane e dei Monopoli,” Planzi said.

“From this point of view, Italy represents a benchmark for western countries wishing to adopt national license systems, thanks to a regulatory system that ‘puts the consumer at the centre’ with its central objectives of forbidding minors from gaming and protecting consumers from fraudulent practices and gaming-related harm.”
