Lithuanian clampdown on online gambling starts

News on 22 Jan 2016

access the William Hill and Unibet websites were met by a page redirecting them to http://blokuojama.lpt.lt/ with a message advising punters that the website they were trying to access has been blocked for “illegal remote gambling”.

Players were urged to contact Gaming Control Authority under the Ministry Of Finance of the Republic of Lithuania for more details, and on doing so one player was advised that effective January 1st 2016 all remote gaming companies wishing to operate in Lithuania are required to be locally licensed and regulated.

The information comes against a background where late last year Lithuanian politicians and enforcers agreed on a stricter enforcement drive to ensure that only companies holding Lithuanian licenses legally access online punters in the Baltic nation.

Players were told that the web-blocking option has also been taken by neighbouring states Estonia and Latvia, and will be enforced through the courts if necessary.

Players were directed to a blacklist at http://www.lpt.lt/nelegalios-losimu-veiklos-vykdytojai/ which at present names Unibet, William Hill and Betway.
