The renewed nationwide blitz on internet gambling announced earlier this week by the national government (see previous report) appears to be gathering momentum across the provinces.

On Friday acting police chief Datuk A. Paramasivam in the Perak region announced that 835 people have been arrested this year in 2,847 raids conducted under Op Cantas Khas Dadu for involvement in computerised illegal gambling activities.

Police combined with local authorities in the actions, seizing 7,069 computer sets and severing the supply of electricity to 71 separate premises where illegal activity had been uncovered, he said.

The police officer warned that the police would not hesitate to take action against anyone caught gambling on the internet, operating a gambling enterprise or promoting online gambling.

October 27 was the most active day of the operation, with police raiding 197 venues in Lower Perak, Ipoh, Taiping, Selama, Batu Gajah and Sungai Siput, resulting in the arrests of 27 individuals?

Last year, police in the province arrested 442 persons involved in online gambling activities and seized 5,180 computers in 2,997 raids.
