Moves to restrict gambling advertising in Belgium progress

News on 17 Oct 2017

The Belgian Minister of Justice Koen Geens’ proposed amendment to the Betting and Gaming Act, specifically targeting restrictions on gambling advertising has been approved by the Belgian Council of Ministers.

The preliminary draft law submitted in June 2017, with the support of the Belgian Gaming Commission (BGC), bans the broadcast of gambling advertisements before 20h00, from live sporting events altogether and from appearing on sports related equipment and kits, a blow in sponsorship terms for operators and sport club’s alike.

In addition, the proposed legislation raises the minimum online gambling age to 21, previously set at 18 years of age, and strengthens the Gambling Commission’s sanctioning powers.
