As of January 1, 2019, Romanian licensed remote gambling operators were required to pay a new 2 percent turnover tax, the proceeds of which will be used to fund social welfare programmes.

The additional tax, gazetted in the Government Emergency Ordinance 114/2018 published December 29, 2018, is over and above the existing 16 percent on GGR and annual license fees levied by the Romanian regulator, Oficiul National Pentru Jocuri de Noroc (ONJN).

The new tax becomes due on the 25th of the next month, the first payment being February 25, 2019.
