Sports bodies to benefit from Irish online gambling tax, says minister

News on 28 Jan 2014

Ireland’s minister for sport, Leo Varadkar, told the Irish Independent newspaper Monday that sports bodies should benefit from any increase in the betting tax, which is currently being extended to embrace online betting.

At present, one per cent of the tax intake, worth Euro 27 million in 2012, is earmarked for the Horse and Greyhound fund, the newspaper reports.

However, sports bodies such as Football Association Ireland have lobbied for the proceeds to be extended to other sports, and the minister said that he was supportive of that concept.
