Vermont legislature approves daily fantasy sports bill

News on 17 May 2017

Reports from Vermont indicate that late last week the state legislature finally approved the legalisation of daily fantasy sports and have forwarded the relevant bill to the governor for his signature into state law.

Lawmakers in the House and Senate put their heads together to blend bills in each chamber and form a consensus.

The approval was given over the negative opinion of the state Attorney General that DFS constitutes illegal gambling. The quantum for registration fees and tax rates has yet to be finalised subject to input from the governor’s office.

The bill has now-standard provisions used in many US states to protect consumers and ensure that games are fair; operator employees and family are barred from taking part in competitions, and there are restrictions on age (18 years) and the participation of professional athletes and other “insiders”.

There are also advertising restrictions on material that makes DFS attractive to minors.

Reports from Vermont indicate that around 80,000 state residents play DFS contests.
