Online casinos licensed to serve players in Sweden.
The Swedish Gambling Authority, known in Sweden as Spelinspektionen, licenses and supervises online casinos serving the Swedish market. Its public register identifies current licence holders, their authorised forms of gambling and the website addresses associated with each licence.
A Swedish commercial online gambling licence can cover casino games, online bingo and online slots. The licence belongs to the named operator and applies to the approved gambling services and websites, so players should verify both the responsible company and the exact domain before registering.
The Swedish Gambling Authority, or Spelinspektionen, licenses and supervises gambling offered to the Swedish market. The present licensing system is based on the Gambling Act (2018:1138), which came into force on 1 January 2019.
An operator offering online casino gambling directed at Sweden must hold the appropriate Swedish licence. A licence from Malta, Curaçao or another jurisdiction does not by itself authorise an operator to target the Swedish market. Swedish licences are granted to a particular legal entity, cover specified forms of gambling and are normally issued for a limited period of no more than five years.
A commercial online gambling licence can cover casino games, online bingo and computer-simulated gaming machines, commonly presented to players as online slots. Betting is a separate licence category, although an operator may hold both types of licence.
Start with the casino’s footer and terms and conditions. Identify the legal company responsible for the account rather than relying only on the casino’s trading name or licensing logo.
Compare that company and the exact casino domain with the Swedish Gambling Authority’s public licence register. The register contains operators with valid licences or permits and lists the website addresses associated with online gambling and betting licences.
Check the licence type and validity period as well as the company name. One operator may run several brands, while similarly named or copied websites may not be covered. If the domain being visited does not appear with the relevant licence holder, do not assume that another domain belonging to the same group makes it authorised.
The company operating player accounts and accepting wagers needs a commercial online gambling licence. Businesses that manufacture, supply, install or modify gambling software used for Swedish online gambling require a separate gambling-software permit.
A software permit is a business-to-business authorisation. It allows an approved supplier to provide gambling software within the regulated market, but it does not allow that supplier to operate an online casino for players. When checking a casino, verify the player-facing operator rather than relying on the name of a game studio, platform or software supplier.
Swedish-licensed operators must register players and verify their identity. Licensed gambling cannot be provided to anyone under 18, and operators must observe technical and security requirements for their gambling and business systems.
The rules also impose a duty of care. Operators must monitor gambling behaviour, act when there are indications of excessive gambling and help players reduce their gambling where necessary. Online players must be able to set deposit limits, and those limits must be respected by the operator.
Bonuses are tightly restricted. A licence holder may normally offer a bonus only on the first occasion when a player gambles with that licence holder. Swedish rules also require moderate marketing and prohibit direct gambling advertising to people who have self-excluded.
The regulator summarises these requirements on its responsible-gambling page.
Spelpaus is Sweden’s national self-exclusion register. Operators offering licensed gambling that requires player registration must be connected to it and check the register when a person registers or logs in.
A Spelpaus exclusion applies across licensed, registered gambling in Sweden rather than to only one casino. Available periods include 10 days, one month, three months, six months or until further notice. An indefinite exclusion remains in place for at least 12 months, and an active exclusion cannot be cancelled early.
Self-excluded players must also be excluded from direct marketing. Players can access the service through Spelpaus.se.
Complain directly to the casino first and give it a reasonable opportunity to respond. Keep copies of account records, transaction details, identity-verification requests, emails, screenshots and the terms that applied at the time.
Spelinspektionen accepts information about suspected breaches of gambling law and may use complaints as a basis for supervision. However, it does not decide individual contractual disputes or recover money for players.
If an operator has received the requested documentation but still refuses to release money from a gambling account, the dispute may be taken to the Swedish National Board for Consumer Disputes, Allmänna reklamationsnämnden or ARN. Complaints about marketing or potentially unfair contract terms fall within the Consumer Agency’s area. The regulator explains these routes on its player complaints page.
A Swedish licence concerns gambling offered to the Swedish market. It does not mean that the same casino brand is authorised in every country, as international operators may use different companies, licences and domains for different markets.
Regulatory supervision, identity checks and responsible-gambling controls provide meaningful protections, but a licence cannot prevent every payment delay, account dispute or customer-service problem. Players must still read the casino’s withdrawal rules and verify which company holds their funds.
The Swedish Tax Agency states that players do not pay tax on winnings from gambling companies holding the required Swedish licence. Different rules can apply to unlicensed or overseas gambling, so this should not be treated as personal tax advice.
The Swedish framework provides a public operator register, identity verification, technical standards, deposit limits, a duty of care and nationwide self-exclusion through Spelpaus. Its restrictions on bonuses and marketing are also stronger than those found in many international licensing systems.
A licence should nevertheless be treated as one part of the assessment. Confirm the exact operator and domain, check that the licence remains valid, read the payment and verification rules and choose limits appropriate to your circumstances before depositing.
