Powerball won on South Carolina ticket

News on 21 Aug 2009

The Spartenburg Herald Journal reports that the massive U.S. Powerball lottery main prize of $259.9 million has been won by someone as yet unknown who bought a ticket at a convenience store in South Carolina.
The single winning ticket for Wednesday’s drawing was sold in Columbia, but no one had come forward to claim the prize by Thursday afternoon, the newspaper reported.
Lottery officials said the ticket matched all the winning numbers for the midweek drawing: 14, 24, 31, 43 and 51. The Powerball was 27 and the multiplier was 5.
The Powerball jackpot is the largest ever won with a ticket bought in South Carolina. Prizes have to be claimed within 180 days, failing which the prize is paid out to the 30 US states that operate the lottery.
