Betclic bags first Portuguese online gambling licence

News on 26 May 2016

The French online gambling group Betclic Everest has claimed the first online sports betting licence in the new Portuguese national regulatory jurisdiction, Regulação e Inspeção de Jogos do Turismo de Portugal.

A company spokesman said Betclic, which is already licensed in Malta and France, had been waiting for a year for the Portuguese jurisdiction to open its doors.

The new licence follows a truce between Betclic and the Belgian regulator earlier this month after months of feuding, allowing the group to licence and launch Betclic.be in that market (see previous report).

Media reports from Portugal estimate that the regulator is currently considering a further 11 licenses, but that has yet to be confirmed. If true, this would indicate that the lure of the Portuguese internet gambling business is greater than the discouraging effect that the jurisdiction’s high tax rates would suggest.
