British government prevails in gambling bill appeal

News on 11 Oct 2014

The much anticipated ruling of the court appeal brought by the Gibraltar Betting and Gaming Association (GBGA) against the British Government’s Gambling Commission was dismissed by British High Court Justice Nicholas Green Friday who said: “Parliament was clearly within its rights to act as it did.”

The new Gambling (Licensing and Advertising) Bill, which was pushed back for a month to allow for the ruling, will come into force on November 1, 2014.

Following the dismissal, a GBGA statement read: “We remain concerned the UK regulator will find it difficult to hold companies to account in jurisdictions outside of the EU where it has no legal powers and common legal framework or culture.”
