Police in Cyprus launched a series of anti-online gambling raids across the Mediterranean island over the weekend, seizing a rather meagre haul of 17 computers and a small amount of cash, according to reports in the Cyprus Mail.

The officers were acting in support of the recently passed and highly controversial law banning betting shops from offering online gambling on the island

“A broad scale operation was launched by members of the police island-wide in the evening, aimed at implementing and maintaining the new legislation that was enforced recently involving the gambling law and online betting,” a police spokesman said.

Presenting search warrants, officers checked 7 betting shops and terminals, arresting nineteen persons who included players and shop employees.

“Such campaigns will continue with the aim of strictly implementing the law,” said the police.
