DoJ opinion a curve ball for Bono Mack sub-committee

News on 25 Jan 2012

House Energy and Commerce subcommittee on Manufacturing’s Chairwoman Mary Bono Mack (R-Calif.) has spoken out on the U.S. Department of Justice’s reversal of its opinion on The Wire Act saying it “created considerable uncertainty for the legal future of online gambling”.

The memorandum released by the DOJ at the end of last year took many by surprise when it clarified its stance on the Wire Act, referring to the ban on interstate transactions related to gambling, as applying only to sports betting, potentially opening the floodgates to all other forms of intrastate internet gambling .

Bono Mack, who’s subcommittee has held several hearings on the legalisation of internet gambling and are considering the proposed federal bill submitted by Rep. Joe Barton (R-Texas) which would legalise and regulate online poker, told reporters a hearing featuring law enforcement officials and the DOJ would be the next likely step.
