Foreign companies make inroads into the Swedish gambling market

On the eve of this week’s Spelakademin conference in Sweden this week, the consulting firm Mediavision revealed that over the past year 61 percent of all new Swedish gambling accounts were registered with foreign operators.

Although the state-owned Svenska Spel and ATG companies continue to dominate the local market, foreign online companies continue to make inroads, and in the first quarter of 2017 their market share reached 23 percent, according to official numbers from regulator Lotteriinspektionen.

The conference took place September 7-8 and discussed the government’s proposals regarding gaming licenses following its proposed gambling reforms opening up the industry, particularly in the online sector, in order to comply with European Commission requirements.

Mediavision claims that bet365 accounts for 9 percent of gambling accounts opened in the past year, with the Kindred Group subsidiary Unibet taking 8 percent and LeoVegas 7 percent.
