German state does its own thing on sports betting

News on 7 Sep 2016

The German online sports betting scene continues to represent a confusing regulatory mess with unwarranted restrictions, court rulings and European Commission clashes (see previous  reports), but it appears that the state of Hessen has decided to break out of the impasse with its own – albeit temporary – solution.

The province’s Ministry of the Interior announced this week that, at least until there is absolute clarity on the federal regulatory situation, it will consider applications for temporary land and online sports betting licenses from suitable operators.

Commencing September 15, operators have a two-month window of opportunity to make application for these temporary permits.

The permits constrain holders to operate only in Hesse, and detail on fees and duration is not yet available.
