Cash strapped Hungary to hike gambling taxes

News on 13 Sep 2011

The Budapest Business Journal reports that the cash-starved Hungarian government is to increase the tax on online gambling and gambling in general from 2012.
The intention to levy heavier taxes was announced in a parliamentary committee Tuesday by National Economy Ministry György Matolcsy.
Answering a question by a committee member, Matolcsy said the concept for taxing online gambling was being prepared. Levying the tax will be a technically difficult task, he added, without revealing further information on the rate under consideration.
Matolcsy confirmed government plans to raise the gambling tax on general gaming machines from November 1, 2011. The bill on that increase is already before Parliament, he said.
