Irish proposed online tax legislation plans ongoing

News on 9 Nov 2011

Responding to a sports body funding inequity question from Irish Labour Party politician Aodhán Ó Ríordáin, the Irish Minister for Finance Michael Noonan confirmed that work on legislation covering an online betting tax on bets placed in Ireland is ongoing.

The lowering of betting duties from 2 percent to 1 percent in 2007 and the increasing popularity of internet betting has impacted on Irish tax revenues falling from Euro 54 million to Euro 30 million according to RTE.

The proposed legislation would institute a licencing system and a betting duty for online operators taking bets from Ireland.  Noonan acknowledged that it is currently a challenge to collect tax revenues on bets placed online as they were being processed in other jurisdictions.
