New chief for Spain’s online gambling trade association

Spain’s online gambling trade association, La Asociación Española de Juego Digital (Jdigital) has a new president following the election of Sportium Digital director Mikel López de Torre.

López de Torre has been an active member of the association and was Vice President prior to his election. He replaces Jdigital founder Sacha Michaud at the head of the trade body, which was founded six years ago in tandem with the liberalisation of Spain’s online gambling market.

Paying tribute to his successor, Michaud said that López de Torre is the ideal choice for the top job due to his extensive experience and respected track record in the industry, where he has worked for the past 12 years with Betfair as its digital executive between 2006 and 2013, followed by heading Sportium’s online business since 2015.

The new Jdigital chief said he was concerned that members fully addressed the social responsibility imperative, warning:

“Over the next five years, the industry will see further consolidation, something that entails greater responsibility. As a mature industry, we must be aware of the impact we have on society. If we want to continue to build a healthy and transparent industry, we must work toward ensuring monitoring and accountability.”
