New Hampshire online gambling legalisation measure is puzzling

News on 22 Feb 2017

Observers are scratching their heads over a New Hampshire online gambling legalisation proposal filed in the state House in January by Republican Party representatives Eric Schleien, Nick Zaricki, and Robert Fisher, which remains with the House Ways and Means Committee following an information hearing late January (see previous  report).

The reason for their puzzlement is that HB562 seeks only to add online gambling to the list of state pursuits that are officially regarded as not illegal gambling in terms of state law…in other words it proposes no state taxes or regulatory measures, and merely seeks to decriminalise the genre, which on the face of it would appear to fly in the face of political logic.

Given the above, there would not appear to be much of a future for the bill…unless it is intended to encourage discussion and amendments adding the usual tax and regulatory imperatives.
