Portuguese regulator issues ninth online gambling licence

News on 7 Sep 2017

Portugal’s gambling regulator Serviço Regulação e Inspeção de Jogos do Turismo de Portugal has awarded its ninth online gambling licence to local land gaming operator Sociedade Figueira Praia, which plans to launch online operations on the Casinoportugal.pt website.

High taxes have discouraged many online operators from seeking a Portuguese licence, although prominent online companies like PokerStars, Betclic Everest Group and BET Entertainment have ventured into the market, along with several land casino operators keen to add online gambling to their revenue streams.

A spokesman for Sociedade Figueira Praia, which is owned by Amorim Turismo, revealed recently that the casino element of the new online enterprise will be powered by NetEnt and iSoftbet, but that sports betting will be an important activity.
