Cambodia government mulls online sports betting licensing

News on 24 Jun 2014

New gambling laws, currently being drafted to update Cambodia’s antiquated gaming legislation, include a study of regulated and licensed internet and mobile sports betting for the nation’s football-mad punters, a spokesman confirmed this week.

Finance and Economics Ministry spokesman Ros Phirun told local media that the implementation of such a scheme was still some way off, but that it was being seriously considered as part of the overall project to bring gambling legislation up to date.

The Cambodian legal situation can be confusing; whilst sports betting is generally regarded as an illegal practice, a number of Cambodia’s land operators offer facilities – in some cases including online services – within their premises, and inevitably there are any number of illegal internet betting outfits in operation, as evidenced by frequent reports of successful police actions (see previous reports).
