Connecticut prepares for legalised sports betting

Connecticut has joined Mississippi in passing legislation preparing for legalised sports betting in the state, conditional on the striking down or repeal of existing federal laws which ban betting in all but four US states.

The contentious federal Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act is under attack from all sides – including the American Gaming Association – and will soon be the subject of a Supreme Court hearing as New Jersey seeks to legalise intrastate sports betting.

Bill H6948, which was passed by the Connecticut legislature last month, was signed off by Gov. Danell Malloy this week, and contains the following key caveat:

“The Commissioner of Consumer Protection shall adopt regulations, in accordance with the provisions of chapter 54 of the general statutes, to regulate wagering on sporting events to the extent permitted by state and federal law.”
