eSports team now owned by top entertainment venue

News on 1 Aug 2017

Major entertainment venue owners Madison Square Garden appear to have seen the value in the burgeoning eSports sector, acquiring a controlling interest in the Counter Logic Gaming team, a popular and successful League of Legends player side.

Madison Garden pioneered eSports in New York to some extent, hosting the first eSports live event in 2015, which Counter Logic Gaming won.

Counter Logic Gaming will join an impressive stable in the Madison Square Garden sports division, one that includes top ice hockey and basketball sides New York Knicks and New York Rangers.

Counter Logic Gaming offers good potential; aside from its League of Legends team, it fields five other teams specialising in other eSports games and recently agreed a sponsorship deal with a top US energy drinks group.

Madison Square Garden CEO David O’Connor appreciates the possibilities, commenting in a company statement that his group has extensively studied the genre, is keenly interested in eSports and is confident that the sector “…now stands on the verge of enormous change”.
