German state lotteries join forces

News on 5 Jul 2012

The sixteen German Lander have combined offerings from state lottery vendors NKL German Lottery Northwest (NKL) and the South German Class Lottery (SKL) to form the country’s first nationwide state lottery dubbed the Gemeinsame Klassenlotterie (GKL).

A formal statement describes the formation as a primarily corrective measure decided on by the Prime Minister as an amendment to the State Treaty on Gambling.  Going forward, NKL and SKL will be operated as a joint institution of public law.

For players, the new national lottery offerings will remain unchanged with head offices of both state vendors remaining situated in Hamburg and Munich.

The German Government’s intent is to provide an attractive alternative to private gambling sites under a Government-guaranteed, controlled system offering lotteries and related gaming activity said Dr. Gerhard Rombach, former Director of SKL, and the present NKL chief executive officer Günther Schneider in a joint advisory.

The new collaboration promises new additions to the existing lottery offering by 2013.
