Internet betting company drops Spanish soccer sponsorship

Uncertainties regarding licensing and taxation in the Spanish online gambling market have apparently persuaded the Asian-facing internet sports betting operator 12Bet.com not to renew its sponsorship deal with Sevilla FC.
The sponsorship deal, signed in August 2009 and due for renewal this year, saw 12bet replace 888.com as the club’s main sponsor.
A spokesman for 12bet said that the company had decided that it would not be applying for a Spanish national licence.
Spain is currently in the throes of extensive changes to its online betting laws, the subject of much debate and amendments (see previous reports).
Manuel Vizcaíno, deputy director of organisation and management at Sevilla said this week that the club is considering other options.
“We have various opportunities and options from other bookmakers. We hope these will go ahead in the coming months,” he said.
