Internet gambling supporter to run for U.S. President

News on 26 Apr 2011

Being a Republican and supporting online gambling are not necessarily complementary ambitions these days, but one of internet gambling’s staunchest and most consistent supporters, Congressman Ron Paul of Texas fits the bill…and he has just announced that he intends to run for US president in 2012.
The 75-year-old Congressman has long espoused the view that government’s job is not to dictate morals to the electorate, and that it should avoid interfering with the reasonable and legal exercise of personal adult freedom of choice that does not disrupt the rights of other Americans.
Congressman Paul is widely respected for his astute views on economics and considerable experience in politics, where he is now serving his 12th term in Congress. He is currently in the initial stages of his presidential bid, but is expected to announce his electioneering team at the Republican caucus in Iowa.
The National Journal reports that Paul’s outspoken libertarian views and folksy style have made him a cult hero during two previous presidential campaigns in 1988 and 2008.
Sources close to Paul told the publication that he will shortly unveil an exploratory presidential committee, a key step in gearing up for a White House race.
Paul’s book, The Revolution: A Manifesto reached the top in New York Times’ Best Seller List in 2008. He has just launched his latest book, Liberty Defined.
