Malaysian police in online gambling bust

Police in Temerloh, a Malaysian town about 130 kilometres from Kuala Lumpur, reported Monday that yet another cyber cafe offering online gambling to patrons has been busted following complaints from the public.

Chief Inspector Rizal Mohd Dan, who led an evening raid by seven officers on the premises, told The Star newspaper that 30 computers were seized and two persons – one a punter – had been arrested.

The Chief Inspector warned illegal operators that offering online gambling was a criminal offence, for which penalties included a minimum fine of RM10,000 for each machine seized or up to five years in prison.

He claimed that around a hundred illegal gambling outlets disguised as cyber cafes were thought to be operating in the Temerloh and Mentakab areas, but promised that the police would deal with them all over time.
